Nederland hinkt achterop.
petition against copayment for home care gains broad support
The Dutch Association of Nurses and Caregivers (V&VN) delivered a petition titled ‘No Price on Home Nursing Care’ to the Second Chamber on February 24, 2026. It gathered more than 30,000 signatures in under three weeks. The petition opposes plans by the new coalition government to introduce a patient copayment for home nursing services. V&VN warns that financial barriers could deter vulnerable patients from seeking timely care. This may lead to worsening health conditions and higher long-term healthcare costs [1]. Support comes from healthcare professionals and organizations including ActiZ, Patient Federation Netherlands, and the National Association of General Practitioners [2].
health committee receives call for action on hereditary cancer risks
Stichting Erfelijke Kanker Nederland (SEKN) submitted a petition urging improved policies for individuals with inherited cancer predispositions. Around 1 in 60 Dutch citizens carries such a genetic risk, often unaware of it [3]. The petition calls on the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport to ensure families receive professional counseling when hereditary risks are identified. It also demands public reimbursement for preventive measures like genetic testing and regular screenings [3]. Supported by the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Dutch Association of Clinical Genetics, SEKN stresses early detection saves lives. The petition was formally received during the weekly petition session in the States Passage [1].
pfas pollution triggers urgent call for stricter regulation
More than 26,000 citizens signed a petition calling for immediate action against per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Delivered by DeGoedeZaak and supported by environmental groups including Green Care Alliance and Nature & Environment, the petition criticizes existing regulations as inadequate [4]. Recent research shows nearly all Dutch people have blood levels exceeding health thresholds [5]. Exposure is linked to immune system damage, liver disease, cancer, and developmental issues in unborn children [5]. Experts cite France and Denmark as leaders having already banned PFAS in pesticides and consumer goods [6]. The petition urges a national ban ahead of EU legislation and stronger enforcement powers [4].
political pressure builds amid cross-party concern
Representatives across political parties expressed concerns during the petition handover. Members from GroenLinks-PvdA, PVV, VVD, SP, and others attended the sessions [1]. For the PFAS petition, signatories reference a pre-election agreement called ‘PFAS-free Netherlands,’ endorsed by seven parties including D66 and GroenLinks-PvdA [4]. They demand swift implementation. Regarding home care funding, several MPs acknowledged the sector’s importance for preventative medicine and aging in place [2]. While no formal responses were issued yet, the volume of signatures signals strong societal resistance to proposed cost-sharing models and insufficient chemical controls [1][2][4].
